Reflection on Practical 10

Using your favourite metaphor, describe the most important lesson that you had learnt in your EIR journey.
The metaphor I going to use to describe EIR will be a planner book. The planner book is like a reminder book, to remind me things I ought to do. Every time as I look through the planner book, it tells me my plans for the week and what am I supposed to do on that particular day. And it is just like EIR lessons, every time I go to the lesson, it will remind me the importance of our actions in Internet. It teaches me what I ought to do and what I should not do when I'm on the Internet.

The most important lesson I had learnt in the EIR journey is the Ethnic and Internet. This lesson teaches me the impact of Internet, to be mindful of my actions on the Internet and what are the right ways to be on the Internet.

For example, in the lecture slides about Netiquette, it teaches me that I have to be mindful of my own actions when I'm on the Internet, I have to think of what others will think about  the information I want to post before posting it. Always be cautious and think of others before you do. Respect the others and do not prob in to people personal life.

EIR lesson serves as a reminder to all of us, to not forget the basic rules of Internet.

Site visit reflections 2

Site visit reflections

1.Which features/facilities are more interesting to you? Why?

The facilities that are more interesting to me would be the Interactive IPTV and the Business Analytics Shared Services for Retail & Wholesale Sectors.I found the Interactive IPTV interesting because the television can not only watch shows but also can do lots of different things. For example, we can access internet through television! We don't have to use laptop to access internet anymore! And there is a program called Televisitation whereby we can control our house appliances with this facility. Even if we are not at home, we can just use our iPad or iPhone to control it! For example, we can switch off the light or those electrical applications that we forgot to switch off before we go out! This really brings a lot of convenience for us! The program, Televisitation also allow us to do a video call using the television! Is just like how we use Skype but is way better than Skype. As we can have a conversation of more than two person! Which is pretty awesome, as we can have the conversation in one go, like conferencing!

The next facility that i found interesting would be the Business Analytics Shared Services for Retail & Wholesale Sectors. The concept is similar to shopping, we can buy our stuffs using this program. The only different is we can check out the price before purchasing and we can also "try" the product before we purchase it. For example, if you want to purchase cosmetic makeup, you can take a picture of yourself using the machine and "apply" the makeup on your face to see whether it suits you before purchasing! In this way, you don't have to be afraid of buying things that doesn't suit you and you can try different types of cosmetic makeup available! The best thing is all the prices are listed there!

2. Compare this site visit e-learning activity with attending physical EIR classes in TP.

Attending this site visit e-learning activity is definitely much more interesting that attending physical EIR classes in TP. As during this site visit we are able to have hands-on experience, we can try the facilities available and we can see what this facilities can help us in our daily life which is more like a practical lesson. Physical EIR classes in TP is more like a theory lesson as we only go through the lecture notes and looking at information at the internet which doesn't allows us to have hands-on experience.

3. Briefly describe ONE ethical issue covered in EIR lecture notes 11 & 12.

One ethical issue covered in EIR lecture note 11 is privacy issues. We always have to be cautious on the information that we reveal at the internet. As we would not be able to know who will read this information and whether it will be posted at somewhere else without us knowing. Therefore, never publish your personal information at the internet.

For example, when you are asked to fill in your address/your ic number/your mobile phone number/bank account number or any personal information, NEVER fill them in. Unless is it for a trust able website like government website.

4. Comment on how this ethical issue can be applied to the exhibits that you see, hear and experience at iExperience. Use examples from iExperience to explain.

Privacy issues can be applied to any form like Interactive IPTV, Next Gen NBN, Telepresence, Next Gen Office and Next Gen Classroom.  We all need our own privacy and wouldn't want our information being pass down by others without seeking our permission.

5. Suggest how the issues can be handled and what can be done in future.

Users should take note of their own actions at the internet and be cautious.

Reflection on Invisible Web Usage

For my search topic Changes and Trends of “Mobile Phone Photography”, WARC only obtained 21 results whereas the search engine, Google, obtained 86,600,000 results. Also, WARC only obtained two forms of information – articles and research papers whereas Google obtained various forms of information – reports, news article, essay, blogs etc. This shows that WARC is lack of information in compared to the search engine, Google.
WARC:
Google:
For the search results obtained by WARC are all irrelevant to the information I want to obtain whereas Google obtained relevant information.
WARC:
Google:
Therefore, I don’t think the invisible web, World Advertising Research Center (WARC) is more effective than using search engines, meta-search or subject directories.

The reason why I choose, World Advertising Research Center (WARC) database rather than the rest datebases is because, WARC  contains real-life case studies and campaign videos from around the world. WARC provides the latest information and cutting-edge thinking in the areas of marketing, advertising and communications.

EIR - Ice Breaker

I am Huh Eui Lim, currently studying in Temasek Polytechnic Diploma in Interactive Media Informatics(IMI), School of Informatics & IT. I am a Korean, thus my name is quite hard to pronounce. You may think that it's pronounced as huh-u-lim, but it's actually 허의림. Well, I would prefer to be called by my chinese name, Yiling.

One of my hobbies is reading. I don't have any specific author that I fancy but I definitely get hooked onto any book with interesting title. I like watching dramas online, especially Korean dramas as I find Korean artistes are good looking and have great fashion sense.

My favourite celebrities are Big Bang and 2NE1. I think that they are talented and their music are unique and different from the rest. One of my favourite movie is "Rocky Balboa", as I think that the speech he gave is meaningful and it inspired me a lot. My favourite part of the speech is : " If you know what you’re worth, go and get what you’re worth. But you gotta be willing to take the hits, and not pointing fingers saying you ain’t where you wanna be because of him or her or anybody. "

One metaphor that best describes me is "stubborn as a mule." I am a stubborn person, no one can change my decision once I've set my mind to it. Well, it might be a good thing as it means that I will pursue what I want til the end. My EIR goal is to do well for it and get a good result.
